What Are Biological Pollutants in the Home?

Indoor Pollutants
Did you know that everyday ordinary activities like cooking, heating, cooling, cleaning and decorating applications are all ways to release and spread indoor pollutants within the home? It’s not uncommon for the air inside a home to be more polluted than outside air. That’s a pretty staggering thought, isn’t it? But just what is a biological pollutant?

Living Organisms
Biological Pollutants are living organisms. One of the most common areas of impact is our indoor air quality. This can often lead to illness, causing lost school and work days, and necessitating doctor and even hospital visits. I suspect we can all agree that’s not good.

  • animal dander
  • dust mites
  • cockroach parts
  • infectious bacteria and viruses
  • pollen

Biological Pollutants exist everywhere.
It’s not because your home is not clean enough. It’s true; a messy, disorganized house will generally exacerbate the problem. Yet, no matter how clean your home, several of these substances exist within every home. Completely eradicating them is impossible. The goal is to control their spread and impact by holding them to manageable levels.

NUTRIENTS
Provides the food to allow growth

CONSTANT MOISTURE +
POOR AIR CIRCULATION
Creates the climate to allow growth
Firewood
- also a source of moisture, fungi and bugs.
Air Conditioning Systems

Wood
Kerosene & Gas Heaters
Wallboard
Washing Machines
Insulation
Clothes Dryers
Construction Material
Dishwashers

Gas Stove

We are all exposed to Biological Pollutants.
The effect they have on our health depends upon the type and amount of biological pollution exposure and the individual person’s sensitivity and level of health. Some people may never seem to display health reactions from biological pollutants. Others experience one or more of the reactions listed below.

     3 REACTIONS to BPs
  • allergic reaction
  • infectious reaction
  • toxic reaction

Chronic Illness
Sometimes, one or more people within a home become chronically ill with no obvious cause. Developing the most effective strategy for minimizing the presence of Biological Pollutants can be the only thing besides moving out of the building that provide impactful results.

The Answer?
The easy answer is to limit available nutrients and control climate factors wherever possible in order to keep the presence of biological pollutants to the lowest levels possible. Of course, in reviewing the sources of available nutrients listed above, it becomes clear that answer is not so easy after all.
